HIPξGREENΞHEALTHΞTIP: Bypass the Bottled

Filtered tap water is safer than bottled water and also more eco-friendly. Bottled water poses several issues including water contamination, water extraction that often disrupts the ecosystem and the pollution caused by plastic bottles.

However, I believe the point of this video is deeper than filtered over bottled. It solidifies the fact that good marketing sways the public easily. We do not a) ask enough questions, b) easily trust marketing gimmicks and companies with clout and c) effortlessly follow what everyone else is doing. If everyone is buying bottled water, if it is in all of the grocery stores and restaurants and we see it all around us – that is enough proof that it is okay. We do this with everything – from the latest gadget to a newly synthesized food item. During these times, It would be reasonable to assume that if everyone is doing it – take a second glance and a deeper look.

It is not to say that tap water does not have its issues…This is what helped the bottled water industry soar (tap water safety questioned). In spite of this, bottled water is not the answer. The solution would lie in the root cause, which is preventing the continued contamination of our water supply. Check out the NRDC’s 12 ways to Clean Up Our Water. In the meantime, filtered tap water is the best option and if you are in a situation in which you have to purchase bottled water, use the EWG Bottled Water Widget to help make the best choice.
